Architects create a new kind of house
In the late 1800s, French architect Jacques Cousteau and his wife, architect Catherine Delaunay, constructed a house for a man named Élisabeth-Marie-Antoinette, who was in a difficult marriage.
As the couple grew older, Cousteaus plans changed, and he designed a house that was “a great example of what we are now called ‘architecture,'” according to the architectural history site Urbania.
The building is now known as the Courbet Courbet, named for the Courbes of Paris, and was dedicated in 2007.
It has been restored to its original state.
The Courbet was designed by architect Michel Dubreuil, who also designed the Delaunays’ house.
Dubreus designed the Courbeurs in the early 1900s, and the building was named after the Courbs, who lived in the nearby town of Courbeux.
The Courbes’ house has been a source of fascination for many of us in the past.
In 2011, the building received a design review by the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
On a page dedicated to the design of the Courbets house, the National Register described the building as a “unique example of architectural form” and a “sophisticated, multi-layered structure that is both elegant and functional.”
The Courbeures house was also notable for its “architecturally inspired” design, the Architectural Heritage Foundation writes, noting that it is “an example of a house designed specifically for the purposes of architectural expression, rather than the intended function of a residence.””
The building features a large, spacious, and well-designed kitchen and dining room with a terrace and garden, and a large roof-like structure with two vertical cantilevers that create a dramatic effect in the sky.”

The building was featured on the 2013 documentary, “Architects: A Portrait,” which tells the story of the architects who worked on the Courbatour building.
The architect who designed the house in the 1800s is known as Michel Dubrezuil.
He also designed many other famous structures including the Palais des Festivals, the Louvre Museum, and even the Notre Dame Cathedral.
